The production adapts Daniil Kharms's darkly playful novella, in which a dead old woman becomes an impossible-to-remove metaphor for evil. Its absurd situations reveal an unfree society bound by fear, illusions of dignity and a paralysed acceptance of fate. Jan Horák's staging mocks Soviet power while seeking to reclaim the strand of Russian culture that resists oppression, aggression and disregard for human life.
